This riveting documentary follows the entire inception of PET SEMATARY, revealing Stephen King‘s inspiration to write the book, the struggle to get the film made and the unlikely success of a low budget film from Paramount Pictures during the WGA strike.

The documentary features interviews with the Director, Mary Lambert and the entire cast, key crew, town locals as well as never-before-seen footage from the sets in Maine. The film is a detailed look into the making of one of the most enduring cult-horror classics of our generation.

In 1989, bestselling author Stephen King wrote Pet Sematary. Little did King know that his most beloved story that would attract a cult following. In fact, when King first pitched the idea for Pet Semetary, it got denied due to it having a child death scene. He got the green light through Doubleday & Company for the publication.

Several things inspired King’s original Pet SemataryThe Lure of the Wendigo was a cannibalistic monster or evil spirit in folklore. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and W. W. Jacobs’ The Monkey’s Paw also had an inspiration towards King’s novel. Perhaps the piece that binds it all together is when King observed a real pet cemetery.

While King was teaching university in Orrington, Maine, he rented a house. King’s next door neighbor had a pet cemetery in the back yard. The name of it was “The Pet Sematary”. This became the title of King’s novel.

In 1989, Pet Sematary turned into a feature film, directed by Mary Lambert. Stephen penned the screenplay.

Unearthed & Untold: The Path To Pet Sematary is such an engrossing documentary. It’s informative, inspiring, personal, and captivating. The diversity of the cinematography and the photography is intriguing.

The cinematography and animation departments do a spectacular job at relaying historic clips. Some of the best moments in the Pet Sematary film and original sketches are in the documentary

The documentary has invigorating music and sound effects. The cast does an outstanding job with re-imagining moments on the set. Its a re-enactment, in a sense.

Almost 30 years later, Stephen King’s Pet Sematary still holds it’s placed with its fans. And it’s one of those rare novelties that always will.
