On Tuesday, June 6th, 2017 officials gathered for a monumental ground-breaking at The Bronx’s newest state-of-the-art film and television production complex. From York Studios, a new campus will be built from the ground up and named Michaelangelo Campus at 1410 Story Ave.

York Studios Chief Executive Vice President of Operations John Battista was enthusiastic to announce the new project on the 10 acre piece of land that has been vacant for 20 years. Battista used a quote from the film Field of Dreams to illustrate bringing business to the community that will help boost the economy, expose The Bronx for its architecture and culture and appreciate the progress the borough has made.

“If you build it, they will come…”

York Studios Chief Executive Vice President of Operations John Battista

 “Lights, Camera, Action”

…Battista stated the three words that will resonate again in The Bronx.

York Studios Chief Executive Officer John Kalafatis spoke on the positive impact the studio will create for the community by creating jobs and revenue for The Bronx.

“York Studios’ Michaelangelo Campus is unique as it is the first ground-up construction project of a state-of-the-art television and film production facility in the Bronx…”

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul stated, following up on Kalafatis.

“Everyone deserves the dignity of a new job…”

“…York Studios is a home-grown success story and their decision to expand to the Bronx is further proof that the film and television industry is thriving in New York State.”

NYS Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul

Hochul thanked the attendees for believing in The Bronx and humorously expressed;

“This isn’t LaLa Land, this is a spectacular Bronx Tale”.

To paraphrase, the statement is expressed as New York being the future for the film industry, instead of going west.

Ruben Diaz, Jr. Bronx Borough President, welcomed us to “God’s Country”. Diaz brought to our attention the renaissance that has been emerging in the Bronx within the last 8 years.

Diaz emphasized that The Bronx is the safest it’s ever been in comparison to the image of the stained 70s, 80s, and 90s other boroughs have been the primary beneficiaries in the film industry explained Diaz.

“ …TO THE OTHER BOROUGHS, YOU’VE BEEN EXPERIENCING A HEART MEAL WITH THE FILM INDUSTRIES – BILLIONS OF DOLLARS. TODAY THE BROX IS SAYING, ‘WE WANT IN.’”

“The television and film industry is growing across the five boroughs, and The Bronx is no exception.”

Ruben Diaz Jr., Bronx Borough President

Passionate about film since the age of 5, I have always had a fond memory of my love for movies since then. I believe in the escapism and magic that movies can bring to the audience through cinematography, story, and special effects. After studying film for 8 years at Wilmington University and the New York Film Academy, my knowledge about the art has been my greatest power. Born in Brooklyn, raised in Delaware, I found my way back to the Big Apple to pursue my passion! I'm excited to bring my love for film to you!
