“I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” Film Analysis

Premise:

“I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” is the third entry to the “I Spit on Your Grave” franchise. Written by Daniel Gilboy and directed by R.D. Braunstein the story-line continues years after the events of either the original 1978 entry or the 2010 reboot “I spit on Your Grave”. Sarah Butler reprises the role of the film’s protagonist Jennifer Hills in this latest installment of the franchise.

Cons:

“I Spit on Your Grave” is notorious for the scenes of gratuitous violence and rape. In 1978 Meir Zarchi shocked the world of horror cinema by encapsulating gut wrenching scenes of depravity with the film originally know as “Day of the Woman” (aka “ I Hate Your Guts” aka “The Rape and Revenge of Jennifer Hill” ). “I Spit on Your Grave” brought the sexploitation revenge horror/thriller sub-genre to the forefront with literally an in-your-face approach. The latest installment, “I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” was very tame , shying away from the onslaught of gore and violence. In comparison to both the 1978 original and 2010 reboot of “I Spit on Your Grave” the third entry headed into uncharted territory with its psychological thriller aesthetic.  To clarify, gore and blood is not necessary to produce a successful horror movie, however it is expected within the sub-genre to which “I Spit on Your Grave” dwells upon.

Eloquently stated within the film “I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” is the mentally state of protagonist, Jennifer Hill. After her traumatic event, a reserved, guarded and unstable, Jennifer Hill is thoroughly presented. Jennifer Hill is pushed over the edge when her friend / rape support group member, Marla portrayed by Jennifer Landon is murdered. For the protagonist, everything was well put together in terms of script and visuals sequences (flashbacks, violent thought patterns). Unfortunately, faults soon manifest in the area of character development. What was once a clever and methodical character becomes clumsy, amateurish and outright idiotic in her actions. The problem arise when the protagonist, Jennifer Hill embarks on her acts of vigilantism.

Pros:

Injustice towards rape victims was the main formula used within the film, “I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine”. The concept of a legal system failing victims of rape was applied remarkably well and successfully captured the attention and sentiments from the audience. From the seventeen year old describing her constant abuse at the hands of her step father to the grieving father who’s daughter committed suicide as a result of her rape.  “I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” succeeds in making the audience cringe with the weight of sorrow, anger and disgust.

Sarah Butler truly shines, her reprisal of the film’s protagonist, Jennifer Hill was phenomenal despite the character itself having development faults. Sarah Butler truly embodies the role of the character, she offers a profound intensity to the mentally unstable, fragile yet vengeful woman named; Jennifer Hills.

The two, yes only two gory scenes were absolutely well executed, the practical effects that were utilized appeared realistic and merits acclaim. It was evident that a team of creative artists were on hand to offer spectacles of carnage we’ve come to expect from a sexploitation revenge horror/thriller film. Unfortunately, the talents of the effects team weren’t explored further.

 In closing

“I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” may not offer gore, but instead ventures into the realm of a psychological thriller. Vigilantism is the aspect of the film a shift from the originally formulated revenge concept.   If you’re expecting an appalling rape sequence, abuse, torture and some spectacular death scene you’ll be very disappointed.”I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” is void of all of aspects of a sexploitation revenge horror/thriller film. Nevertheless, “I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine” may satisfy the casual horror movie viewer or those unfamiliar with the franchise, a recommended movie to watch.
