Overview James Wan Insidious Chapter 4“Insidious: Chapter 4” has been confirmed and is well on it’s way into development. Just when we thought it was over, the dark supernatural ghost story franchise keeps us entertained with a fourth chapter. The minds of the “Insidious” franchise is reuniting for more dark spirits and old skeletons. James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the original creators of “Insidious” teams up with Blumhouse, Sony Projects Worldwide Acquisitions and Universal Pictures to develop the latest addition to the franchise.

The Timeline of “Insidious”

  • In 2011, director James Wan and writer, Leigh Whannell, introduced us to a new terror. “Insidious” is a dark Fantasy, Horror, Mystery that follows the Lambert family, who become victims to a dark presence. Young Dalton is considered the chosen one, as the dark spirits attempt to take him and trap him in dark realm known as “The Further”.
  • In 2013, the terror continues in “Insidious: Chapter 2”. Just when the Lamberts thought the nightmare was over, the dark spirits give them a rude awakening.
  • In 2015, terror takes a trip down memory lane in “Insidious: Chapter 3”. In this prequel before the haunting of the Lambert family, Elise Rainier uses her ability to contact the dark spirits, who have taken on a new victim.

From what is reported; Lin Shaye  will reprise her role as Elise Rainier in “Insidious: Chapter 4”. Also, from the interview snippet that was shared between Leigh Whannell and We Got This Covered, we can speculate what to expect in the fourth installment.

“I’ll say that I’d like to explore the time between this film and the first film. That whole area where Elise has rediscovered her gift. We’ve kind of established Lin [Shaye] in this particular film as kind of this superhero, so that would be kind of interesting to explore in other films.”

“Insidious: Chapter 4” will be penned by co-creator;  Leigh Whannell. Serving as Producers will be Jason BlumOren Peli  , and co-creator James Wan, who graced us with the first two installments. Insidious Chapter 2Directing the film will be Adam Robitel. “Insidious” franchise veterans  Steven Schneider,  Brian Kavanaugh-Jones , and Charles Layton continue their roles as executive producers. Financing the project will be Sony Projects Worldwide Acquisitions, which will handle international distribution. Universal Pictures will handle domestic distribution.

“Insidious: Chapter 4” is set to release to theaters October 20, 2017.

Personally, I lost interest in the “Insidious” franchise after “Insidious: Chapter 2”. The first installment was my favorite. Here are two reasons why I enjoyed the original:

  • One, that red demon was creepy and frightened me every time I saw it,
  • Two, the story-line in Chapter 1 was on a deeper, darker level than Chapter 2. I didn’t get the same impact in Chapter 2 that I did with the original.

On the flip side, James Wan is one of my favorite directors of all time. Even though he, since, handed the project over to Leigh Whannell in Chapter 3, I am excited he is returning to co-produce “Insidious: Chapter 4”. I feel that we can get this franchise back on track before it literally becomes victim of “The Further”. For those unaware of my reference “The Further” refers to that mysterious realm in the “Insidious” film franchise, the other dimension.

Then, there’s Leigh Whannell’s vision, his continuation on the franchise. As provided in the interview snippet above. Assuming Whannell goes along that route, we can speculate that the franchise will continue in the mind of Elise Rainier. My only question is; how would that concept be approached? Audiences were already introduced to the story “according to Elise Rainier”. The premise was offered in “Insidious: Chapter 3”! It’s almost as if this would have to be a re-imagination in the mind of Elise Rainier.
