Parasites is the latest Action, Horror, Thriller to encompass the survival Horror theme. These are films that offer a story conflict; man versus man. The film sources wilderness explorer John Colter and his conflict with Blackfoot Indians. To sum, Colter was thrust into a deadly game of hunter and the hunted. Stripped of clothes, Colter trekked miles across the forest. Hundreds of Blackfoot Indians were in pursuit of Colter.
Ferrin’s latest film offers the marketing ploy “inspired on true events”.
An overhead view of California’s Sixth Street Viaduct opens the trailer. A quick jump into the next scene finds a man running naked across the aqueduct. This must be one of many John Colter references. Scenes intensify as the hunted finds every means possible to escape his assailants.
The “inspired by” or the “based on a true event” is an attention-grabbing tactic. The hook is to entice viewers into believing said events had in some way occurred. Visuals presented in the Parasites trailer is a familiar one. The trailer brings to mind the 1979 release directed by Walter Hill. There is also a parallel with a modern Horror, Thriller concept. Recently, James DeMonaco provided audiences with a similar composition. These are only a couple of films citing the survival horror concept.
Each reference projects a story of instinct and survival set against an urban backdrop. Parasite looks to be an impressive entry into the survival horror sub-genre. Stay tuned to DecayMag for our review of Chad Ferrin’s Parasites .
