Show Yourself shows a man’s slow descent into madness. This is a personal speculation I base on the trailer. From the synopsis, we know that Travis is dealing with the grief of his loss of a good friend. Isolating himself in the woods to be alone and say goodbye is a premise we see often in like-minded films. As the story progresses, this isolation brings about strange occurrences.
Productions like this can go down one of two paths. There is a serial killer or psychopath on the loose in the woods who targets and preys on these characters. Or, these characters’ minds can take a slow turn into insanity, where they conjure up nightmarish presences and events. So, there can be a supernatural twist two it. It’s strange what being alone in dark places for extended amounts of time can do to the psyche. Yet, films such as this reveal all too well the psychological turmoil. That’s what makes these productions interesting.
The abrupt turn the Show Yourself trailer takes from calm and subtle to dark and drastic is an attention gainer. Billy Ray Brewton introduces a premise that can spiral down some obvious paths.
