Universal Classic Monsters To Be Connected Universe.
Universal classic movie monsters are getting a reboot. While the news is no surprise to some. Many may not be aware that production is moving forward. The studio giant aims at creating an individual film for each classic monster. Each story thread will culminate into one platform. The venture mirrors the profitable development Marvel Studios did with The Avengers franchise.
Universal will launch the franchise with The Mummy. A film centered on a yet untitled classic monster will follow. According to rumors, The Invisible Man will be the second addition. Johnny Depp it seems is the actor many believe will be portraying the titular role.
The Mummy was first released in 1932. Karl Freund directed the feature. The 1999 release of The Mummy was the first modern reboot. Stephen Sommers wrote and directed the film. Sommers would later return as writer and director for the sequel released in 2001.
The Mummy Production
Accounts that were once rumors and speculation are now solidified as truth. Back in January 2016, we reported on the swirl of rumors about the upcoming Mummy film. Of particular interest, was the iconic role. The rumors focused on a possible gender switch. Considered for the role would be the actress, Sofia Boutella. Also, actor Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, and Russell Crowe were in talks for key roles.
A modernization on Universal’s The Mummy is in development. In fact, this past Sunday the 10th of July 2016 found the cast and crew filming a scene in Central London. Entertainment news website Coming Soon posted a collection of behind the scene photographs. The production team lost the element of surprise with the costume design. Below are images captured of actor Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis. Cruise portrays Navy Seal Tyler Colt. During Colt’s mission to track down terrorists in the Iraqi desert, he accidentally awakens the cure of The Mummy.
Russell Crowe will be portraying the iconic characters Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. According to IMDB.com The Mummy is scheduled for a 2017 release, the 9th of June to be precise. The release date is not set in stone and is subject to change. Alex Kurtzman serves as director. Jon Spaihts penned the screenplay.
The synopsis for the film reads as follows:
An ancient queen is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension.
Frankenstein Film Developing
Variety is reporting that actor Javier Bardem is in negotiations to star in Universal’s Frankenstein reboot. A role has not yet been determined. Yet, it’s stated that Bardem will be cast in multiple films including a spin-off.
Variety also revealed to our surprise the inclusion of Bride of Frankenstein for the upcoming slate of remakes.
Bardem had turned down the role of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.
