Wolf Creek: The Series Part I of II -Overview
Wolf Creek released in 2005 and spawned a sequel in 2013. The premise centers on and around the Australian outback. This is the pivotal no man’s land, a place devoid of tourist attractions. Foreigners foolish enough to venture through these parts will meet their demise. This is Mick Taylor’s territory, a serial killer with a penchant for sadism.
Greg McLean penned the script to “Wolf Creek”. Aaron Sterns collaborated in writing efforts for the second installment. Greg McLean serves as director to each film. “Wolf Creek” opened the door for Australia cinema as the next source of the foreign Horror market.
“Wolf Creek” opened the door for Australia cinema as the next source of the foreign Horror market. Although the film claims a basis on true events this not the case. Serial murders committed by Ivan Milat, Bradely Murdoch and the Snowtown murderers may have seeded the idea. Yet, neither of these crimes or its perpetrators had authentic depiction within the film.
The film aims to pacify the welcoming demeanor established by iconic tourist friendly films. Australia offers a seedy underbelly much as anywhere else in the world. This sense of danger is the basis to Mclean’s horror film. Director Greg Mclean offered the following comment on his approach with “Wolf Creek”. Mclean stated:
“The Australian culture is bright sunny beaches, Crocodile Dundee and all that kind of shit, and the shadow side of that is xenophobia, homophobia, sexism, racism, all that kind of stuff that we squash down but is alive and well”.
The synopsis to “Wolf Creek” reads as follows:
Ben, Liz and Kristy; backpackers stranded in the Australian outback, are befriended by a local who is a sadistic psychopath that will plunge them into a hellish nightmare of insufferable torture.
The synopsis to “Wolf Creek 2” reads as follows:
The outback once more becomes a place of horror as another unwitting tourist becomes the prey for crazed, serial-killing pig-hunter Mick Taylor.
