Director Wes Craven, One of the most prominent figures in Horror cinema passed away Sunday in his Los Angeles Home, succumbing to his his battle with brain cancer. Born Wesley Earl Craven in Cleveland on the 2nd of August 2, 1939, Craven was a visionary, with his contribution to horror genre spanning decades. He’s known creating horror’s most iconic characters, Freddy Kruger from the “Nightmare on Elm Street” and Ghostface from the “Scream” franchises.
Craven’s career began in the early 70’s with the gritty, rape-revenge movie “The Last House on the Left” in which he wrote, directed and edited. Although controversial for its violence and gore the film garnered success in the box office and ultimately became a cult classic. In the years that followed Craven created “The Hills have Eyes” and the aforementioned “Nightmare on Elm Street”. As a contributor, Craven was absent after the third installment of “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise but returned years later with “New Nightmare”, a fresh take on the series.
Craven’s success in horror cinema continued well into the 90’s with the “Scream” franchise, the first two installments went on to earn success in domestic box office sales. Craven had a penchant for talent, casting actors; Johnny Depp, Sharon Stone and Bruce Willis on their first roles all of whom have went on to become very successful
By the early 2000’s Craven offered the psychological Thriller “Red Eye” starring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy. Craven would later serve as producer for remakes of his films; the 2006 “The Hill Eyes Have Eyes” and the 2009 “The Last House on the Left”. Presently, Craven produced the television reboot of “Scream” for MTV . Craven also had signed television deals for “The People Under the Stairs” and “We are all Completely Fine” for Syfy, “Decipiles” for UPC and “Sleepers” with Federation Entertainment, all which were in development.
Wes Craven is survived by wife of his third marriage, his sister Carol, son Jonathan, daughter Jessica, grandchildren Miles, Max and Myra-Jean and stepdaughter Nina.
