Over the previous two decades, the video game industry helped pave the road for Horror content. The platform expanded the genre in circumstances the motion picture enterprise couldn’t. By combining an immersive interactive experience with a frightening narrative help create a unique design of entertainment. Horror and its evolution in video games didn’t occur without controversy. For example, the ESRB in the U.S stemmed from the release of Night Trap.
Society is swift to point fingers and distribute liability on artisans and visionaries seeking to advance the envelope in Horror entertainment. The actual obstacle in this and many circumstances of media consumption is in oversight and bad parenting. Yet, this is a subject for another conversation.
Night Trap ignited the present rating system two years after it released in 1992. This judgment occurred following an inquiry against the title. Retailers buying into the denigration opted to pulls Night Trap from its shelves. A Senate discussion on violence in video games led by Senator Joseph Lieberman became a Salem witch hunt. The Senator classified Night Trap as;
…ultraviolet, sick and disgusting, and incorrectly claiming the object of the game was to trap and kill women.
Night Trap had a budget of $1.5 million at the time proportionate to most film productions. Shot in 1986, the proposed staging was for Hasbro’s ControlVision video game console. Yet, the project would remain dormant until Digital Pictures acquired Night Trap. The title circulated across Sega CD console, PC and Mac systems. The rest is history.
Night Trap is one defining pioneer in Survival Horror gaming. The title seems mild in relation to the content observed in today’s releases. Titles such as EA’s DeadSpace, Capcom’s The Evil Within, and Madmind Studio’s Agony are enthralling.
Horror enthusiasts and gamers take note; Night Trap will have a re-release across next-gen consoles and Steam. According to the press release Night Trap will
…be released in special limited-edition versions for the PlayStation and PC Aug. 11 then digitally for both Aug. 15 followed by a release on Xbox Live shortly thereafter.
