World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap Sets Original in Wave of Action Strategy Games
World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap Overview
World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap is a tower defense game. It includes strong Action-RPG elements. The title is a release from Neocore Games.
“Our goal was to push the tower defense genre forward with a unique gameplay mechanic that allows players to build a deadly maze of traps and towers while controlling a character directly from the traditional top-down view of an action-RPG.”
Zoltán Pozsonyi - Producer, Neocore Games
The game revolves around player choosing to be a sorcerer, mercenary, or marksmen. Then setting up different towers and initiating waves to begin. Once you start the wave, hordes of minions come out of a portal and you have to destroy them all.
The World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap differs from other RPG hybrid games. The game offers rich character customizations. You can customize combat kills, trap skills, and world skills. These custom skills get more advanced the more you level up. They also can get tweaked and modified even more through other modifiers. The more you level the more skills you unlock and upgrades you’ll get.
Beyond skill customizations, players are also able to equip armor. Turrets and weapons also have a full array of stats and resistances. The game also has a shop where you can sell your extra loot and buy new items and weapons.
One of the main aspects of the game is tower defense. The World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap goes into this aspect much deeper. This comparison applies to similar tower defense games. There are five different tower types and a twenty-five towers and traps. Each is open for upgrade.
One drawback for The World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap is the tower placement, its not free form. Which means you cannot drop a tower anywhere on the map. Instead, you have prepositioned tiles which allow you to place summoning, traps, and turrets.
The World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap does have a currency you can buy through Xbox live. Instead of using in-game gold. Yet, it is not worth it the hassle. The only advantage of buying the currency is being able to buy equipment quicker.
The graphics are decent. The sound design is your typical RPG hack and slash sounds. Both visual and audio work well with this type of tower defense game.
The World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap is a great game in the RPG tower defense genre. Currently, The World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap is free for Xbox live members and is $5.99 on steam.
